He looks
at the flower
impatiently
He wants
to touch it
He wants
to feel the
smoothness
beneath
his fingertips
and the power
that he'll draw
He reaches
then hesitates
Wondering
if the delicate
bloom
will tremble
He breathes in
its sweet scent
and tenses
His eyes
penetrate
while he grips
Harder
Stronger
Until the release
and the petals fall
silently alone

I've had this tucked away for a little while. I'm glad I found it this morning.
The title adds some nice emotion to this, then the end twists it a bit. I wonder at how his desire could lead him to destroying it, you know.
ReplyDeleteI think the desire for power can destroy just about anything. We can gain more just by letting go. It's an interesting thought. I like where your comment has led me. I do appreciate your visit, X. Thank you :)
Deletecan be read in many ways. (a) as a straightforward man / gardener appreciating the blooms (b) as a hesitant admirer and (c) as a harasser.
ReplyDeleteOh, so many choices, totomai! I love how poetry can have so many different meanings :)
DeleteThis is such a beautiful poem.. absolutely worth the wait :D
ReplyDeleteLots of love,
Sanaa
Thank you so much, Sanaa! Good to see you :)
DeleteSometimes, it seems, if we want to touch something so badly it may not be a good thing We may end up destroying that which we want to love.
ReplyDeleteYes, sadly some do. I like reading everyone's thoughts on this one. Others' perspectives fascinate me sometimes! Thanks for coming by, Mary :)
DeleteI now feel that way about picking flowers, or rather not picking them, for fear it will cause them pain. I once saw a houseplant tremble with fear and shock when some children screamed right beside it.
ReplyDeleteOh, I want to say, 'That poor plant!'. It's interesting to learn that everything is alive. You do think of things differently. Lovely to see you, Sherry :)
Deletedelicate and subtle things are to be treated with respect...love the flower metaphor...
ReplyDeleteWell, they should be! Thank you, Sumana :)
DeleteAs mentioned by Totomai, this can be read in so many ways, and I would like to read it in a way of an admirer who is bit shy but then has the courage....
ReplyDeleteIt's all open to interpretation! Glad you can see it that way, Vandana. Thank you!
DeleteI get a rather sad feeling from this.. to me it's about the man as a conqueror.. once he got he gets what he wants he leaves, ready for the next conquest.. and the flower falls discarded..
ReplyDeleteMany see so many different things in this poem. This was a hard one for me to write, and it was even harder to share actually. Thanks for your thoughts, Bjorn! I do appreciate your time :)
DeleteCuriously I am one those that prefer admiring flowers in their environment abhorring their murder and being placed indoors for we strange beasts to gloat over.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm right there with you, Old Egg :) It's much more amazing to view them in their natural state! Thank you :)
DeleteSo many wonderful layers in this sensuous piece..thoroughly enjoyed letting my imagination unwrap every one of them
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed your visit, Jae Rose :) Thanks a bunch!
DeleteTo ruin that which we think is so worth possessing makes it so hard.
ReplyDeleteIt really does sometimes. Thanks for coming by, GL :)
Deletereally beautiful.. i enjoyed it.. spoke to me.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it, Natasa! Thank you :)
DeleteThe destructive twist at the end and the falling of the petals....such an interesting and thought-provoking ending.
ReplyDeleteThank you, C.C. :)
