The Gold Underneath

I used to write
and then hide it all away
I was worried about
what everyone would say

But I'm getting to know myself
better with each day
And if I could say a few things to you
This is what I'd say

I am me
I am nobody else, but me
I'm finally breaking through
these walls I've built myself
And finally feeling free

I'm finding the gold
that's been buried underneath
this dust
The dust I've let settle
over me
For so long
For too long
And I'm beginning to see
Who I am meant to be

I'm allowing myself to feel
All the things I've been trying 
to keep in
And it's good to feel the warmth again
and to see these gold flecks
shining in my skin

    It's a horrible thing to be trapped in side a self made prison. Those walls are stronger than any man can design. It takes a strong will and a hunger to want to find yourself and break free. I know. Your words speak volumes.

    I LOVE this whole idea....of finding the gold within and bringing it forth. I see so much of my journey in the one you are making, Torie........your writing always resonates with me. I especially love "it's good to feel the warmth again and to see these gold flecks shining in my skin"

    I think you describe a feeling of recovery so well.. The golden flecks on your skin is a wonderful way to describe this, f breaking those bonds and letting the words flow free.

    I think many of us begin by hiding our poetry away
    but then as time goes on we become braver each day
    and we find the gold of who we are is appreciated
    not only by ourselves but by others as well!
    I like the honesty here, Torie.

    Beautifully expressed, Torie. It can be a struggle, to really express one's feelings, as there can be obstacles that trigger hesitation. I find that I can be my complete self with very few people, and parts of myself with many.

    Really enjoyed this.

    Torie this is beautiful and wonderful self-declaration. I can relate to it. Fro so long I wrote and hid away, then I just took a chance and started a blog. But, that's actually a metaphor for other things too - I was shy, introverted, kept things inside. No more. Glad you see the gold beneath the dust.
